چکیده

Every week, motion picture exhibitors must decide whether to keep or replace the movies playing in their theaters in light of the past week’s sales data. This decision is complex because of the dynamic decision environment, the uncertainty of demand, the complex revenue sharing terms between the retailer and the distributor, the need to commit to new movies for several weeks and the competitive release patterns of movies. We formulate this problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) model, and use it to obtain optimal replacement policies for the exhibitor. We examine the effect of differences in quality and quantity of available movies, and their respective release dates on the returns from model-based normative solutions. We also show that two practical heuristics are significantly outperformed by the optimal policy for the MDP model. We conclude by applying the model to industry data.

LRFU: A Spectrum of Policies that Subsumes the Least Recently Used and Least Frequently Used Policies

ÐEfficient and effective buffering of disk blocks in main memory is critical for better file system performance due to a wide speed gap between main memory and hard disks. In such a buffering system, one of the most important design decisions is the block replacement policy that determines which disk block to replace when the buffer is full. In this paper, we show that there exists a spectrum o...

Maintenance Cost Analysis for Replacement Model with Perfect Minimal Repair

With the evolution of technology, the maintenance of sophisticated systems is of concern for system engineers and system designers. The maintenance cost of the system depends in general on the replacement and repair policies. The system replacement may be in a strictly periodic fashion or on a random basis depending upon the maintenance policy. At failure, the repair of the system may be perfor...

An Adaptive Block Management Scheme Using On-Line Detection of Block Reference Patterns

Recent research has shown that near optimal performance can be achieved by adaptive block replacement policies that use user-level hints regarding the block reference pattern. However, obtaining user-level hints requires considerable effort from users making it difficult to apply adaptive replacement policies to diverse kinds of applications. We propose a new adaptive block management scheme th...

The Effect of a Technology Shock on Contract Form: Revenue-sharing in Movie Exhibition and the Coming of Sound

During the silent era, movie producers rented the vast majority of their films to exhibitors for flat per-day fees, but a technology “shock” in the form of the coming of sound led to the widespread replacement of flat fees by revenuesharing. This paper seeks to determine why. It finds that sound technology altered the structure of incentives in movie exhibition, reducing the role of the exhibit...

Comparisons of Replacement Policies with Constant and Random Times

This paper proposes random age, periodic and block replacement policies which are made at random variable times, and optimal policies that minimize their expected cost rates are discussed analytically and computed numerically. We compare such random replacements with their standard policies that are made at constant times. Comparison results show that when costs for random and constant replacem...
